Music
At Yeading Infant and Nursery School, we ensure that music is an enjoyable learning experience as well as a creative opportunity for children to express themselves.
Music is a powerful, unique form of communication that enables personal expression, reflection and emotional development. The teaching of music helps pupils’ ability to listen and appreciate a wide variety of music and to make judgements about musical quality. We encourage the children to explore and experience the pleasure of making and listening to music of different instruments.
Children learn through several activities to develop knowledge skills and understanding of:
- listening to a variety of musical instruments and different kinds of music to, for instance, recognise pitch, tempo, duration and to be able to interpret mood, feelings and expression
- create musical patterns by exploring and experimenting with musical instruments
- controlling sounds through singing and playing tuned and untuned instruments
- rehearsing and performing individually and collectively
responding to music by dance, singing or some other suitable form of expression
We work closely with the Hillingdon Music Service who provide whole class music lessons and teach small groups, including Pupil Premium children, to play instruments such as, Metallophones, Recorders and Singing. The Music teacher brings in a different instrument each week to share with the children ranging from a flute to a double bass. Learning to sing or play an instrument helps concentration, confidence and coordination, as well as being great fun!
We also take part with the Sing! Primary Singing Festival with The Hillingdon Music Service where children are given an opportunity to learn and perform a school solo, work towards a massed song, meet other school singers and learn more about music and performance in breakout workshops. This is a joyous celebration with other primary schools in Hillingdon.
Yeading Cluster Schools (YCS) is made up of ten schools based in Hayes designed to bring enhanced learning experiences to children across all Key Stages and abilities. We are very proud of the achievements of the cluster that came together in 2006. A key factor in our success has been the engagement with local partners including statutory and voluntary community groups which helps the member schools take part in exciting events.
In June each year, ten schools from the Yeading Cluster Schools come together and host a musical extravaganza. The event is held at the Beck Theatre in Hayes. Each year a different theme is chosen e.g. ‘Together We Can Make a Change’ and ‘Diversity’ are some examples. The event creates a platform for schools to celebrate the work carried out in schools to support local and global issues and in building community cohesion through music. Parents and people from the local community watch the children as they reflect on the fundraising events they have been engaged in for local and global causes.
